Hi Welcome!

My name is Hiruni Senarath Dassanayake.

My interest in space and geology started with the Mars research project that began in 2013 when I studied volcanism on Mars. I combined my passion for earth and planetary sciences with geology, physics, and math in an innovative project that I worked on: looking for “water” on Mars.

This project evolved into researching and discovering a possible “crater lake” in Margaritifer Terra, Mars through a 2015 Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Award from the Office of Undergraduate Research at SUNY Buffalo State. I presented my findings at the Geological Society of America (GSA) national meeting in Baltimore, Maryland in November 2015.

The success of my Mars research project gave me a competitive summer internship opportunity with National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. There I began a research project on the geomorphology of distal deposits related to the formation of Hale crater in Margaritifer Terra, Mars. This is my present research project and I am also conducting research to confirm that the Hale distal deposits significantly influenced short term global or regional scale geomorphic activity on Mars.

As a GSA’s  On To the Future Scholar and the founder of Global Mars, besides studying and looking at Mars I enjoy water sports, walking on the beach and a healthy lifestyle.

Thanks for visiting!
